Marcia Brissett-Bailey is a speaker, co-author and advocate and champion for neurodiversity and dyslexia. She is a co-founder of the BDA Cultural Perspective Committee and a board member of several organisations focused on neurodiversity. In this book, she aims to raise awareness in the black and dyslexic communities at large, address barriers that hinder its disclosure and champion the belief that black people can be dyslexic and successful.
The contributors come from a wide range of backgrounds and professions, including CEO’s, business owners, the worlds of cyber security, creative arts and counseling/ health services. Many of the stories the contributors share refer to ways in which the school system failed to recognise their needs, with students leaving secondary school with no qualifications and no diagnosis.
This is a really interesting book that would be of significant value in schools to bring to life how students facing difficulties can deal with these challenges and find their own voice.
The author raises awareness of the different ways that people experience their dyslexic identity in diverse cultural groups and this provides the reader with insights into these very personal journeys.
