A video campaign promoting mandatory dyslexia training for new teachers has been launched by the British Dyslexia Association (BDA).
Teach Dyslexic Britain highlights problems caused by poor teacher awareness and lack of training in dyslexia. The video is designed to encourage supporters to sign the BDA’s e-petition which calls on the Government to ensure that dyslexia training is a part of all initial teacher training programmes.
“It is astonishing that in the 21st century, so many schools, particularly primary schools, are unable to offer dyslexic pupils the level of support necessary to fully access the curriculum”, says Kate Saunders, the charity’s CEO. “If action is not taken urgently, literacy rates among those entering secondary school will continue to remain at an unacceptably low level and dyslexic pupils will continue to face an uncertain future.”
