RSPB Birdwatch lands in schools

Schoolchildren across the country will be undertaking a major survey of birdlife in UK schools this winter as they take part in the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) Big Schools’ Birdwatch.

Now in its tenth year, the survey has helped to track bird populations in schools over the last decade, and build a picture of birds visiting school grounds and the population changes they are experiencing. The activity encourages children and their teachers to discover and learn about the birds that share their school environment, and provides valuable data for RSPB research.

Up to 2,000 schools and 75,000 school children and teachers take part in the Birdwatch each year and in 2010 more than 83,000 birds were counted.
