Read SEN Magazine SEN132 : Sept/Oct here
Making his debut in SEN Magazine, Norwegian journalist Trond Ola Tilseth reports on a fascinating experiment being carried out at the University of Granada, Spain, in which subjects with ADHD use a virtual reality environment to practise planning and organisation of everyday situations (“ADHD: learning to plan in virtual reality”, page 34). It’s a longish article by SEN Magazine standards, but well worth a read.
Lynne Neagle, Cabinet Secretary for Education in the Welsh Government, explains (page 8) the new Curriculum for Wales and the statutory changes in Additional Learning Needs (ALN) provision that are being introduced across the country. One of the great benefits of devolution is the ability of the UK’s constituent nations to implement policy independently. Possibly an even greater benefit is the wealth of policy experience which can be accumulated UK-wide, and the best practice which can be refined and shared between the national governments. That’s the theory, anyway.
If you, like me, were a little hazy about monotropism or metacognition, the time of haziness is over. Turn to page 11 for Ania Atkinson‘s compact and helpful explanation of monotroprism and how it can be harnessed in education settings. On page 20, Rebecca Heyes explores metacognition with particular reference to dyslexic learning, but it’s a skill that could benefit all of us, and in all aspects of learning and self-development.
As usual, there are too many great articles to mention them all, but I would like to draw your attention to the thought-provoking piece by Jeanette Washington on page 28. In monoglot England, spare a thought for learners with dysgraphia who are faced with mastering multiple languages with different phonologies and lettering systems.
Once again, I would like to express our gratitude to all of you, our wonderful advertisers, contributors and readers, without whom SEN Magazine would not happen. And we’d like to extend an open invitation to all: please express your ideas, frustrations or successes in the pages of this magazine. If you have something to say, but haven’t quite marshalled your thoughts, please start marshalling them today. We need you, and we would love to hear from you. Don’t worry about style or presentation—we’re just interested in what you have to say.
