Stars of football’s English Premier League are supporting a campaign to help school children learn to read.

The project offers practical resources for teachers to inspire their pupils to read through the motivational power of the “beautiful game”. Around 1,000 schools, libraries and football clubs across the country will have the opportunity to take part in the scheme free of charge.

Called Premier League Reading Stars, the project is funded by the Premier League and the Arts Council England.

Teachers who sign up will receive a “tactics book” containing ten lesson plans, developed to support the National Curriculum, and a range of Premier League branded materials, including reward badges and reading journals for a class of 32 pupils. They will also receive a day’s free training for a member of staff. Participating organisations will also have access to a collection of online video clips in which Premier League stars deliver a range of literacy challenges.

The programme, organised by The National Literacy Trust, has run since 2003 and it has involved some of the game’s biggest names, including Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney (pictured), who was a Premier League Reading Star in 2009.

The deadline for applications is 13 September 2011 and more information is available at:
