UK Youth has outlined concern over what it sees as a clear link between deprivation and exclusion revealed in the Government’s latest figures on exclusion. The national youth work charity, which specialises in working with young people who have been excluded from school, claims that, despite the decline in exclusions shown in the figures, rates for young people exhibiting key indicators of deprivation are noticeably higher than the national averages.

Children entitled to free school meals are three times more likely to be excluded. Similarly, secondary schools in the most deprived areas have four per cent more exclusions than those in the least deprived areas.
