Tinnitus Awareness Week, previously known as National Tinnitus Week, will take place between 8 – 14 February 2010. The week, organised by independent charity the British Tinnitus Association (BTA), will be the focus of a UK-wide campaign in which the organisation aims to encourage better tinnitus awareness.
Tinnitus is not an illness or disease, but a term that describes the sensation of hearing a noise in the absence of an external sound. Ringing, whistling, and buzzing are common, but more complex sounds may also occur. Nearly five million people in the UK experience tinnitus, and it can often be very distressing for the individual concerned as it can affect sleep, concentration and mood.
