Charity launches online Spellathon

The charity Mencap has announced what it is calling the world’s first ever inclusive English language digital Spellathon Championships. Taking place from 21 to 27 May 2012, the online competition is part of the new format for Spellathon, which has been running for nearly 20 years.

The event aims to improve spelling standards across the UK while raising money to help the charity in its work supporting people with learning disabilities. Entrants are tasked with securing sponsorship to spell a pledged target number of words and this year’s tournament is the first in which people will be able to compete online, on school whiteboards and via smart phone apps.

The charity has enlisted Stephen Fry to voice “The Professor”, a bee who welcomes visitors to the competition website and helps guide them through a series of interactive spelling games.
