2010 Teaching Awards winners announced

The winners of the 2010 UK Teaching Awards were announced at a ceremony in London on 31 October hosted by actor and comedian Lenny Henry and broadcast live on BBC TV. Other famous faces on stage at the event included actress and Teaching Awards President Emma Thompson, Education Secretary Michael Gove, and singer Michael Ball.

In addition to categories for eight individual winners, the “Oscars for teachers” also featured four group awards, including the Henry Winkler Award for a special needs intervention group, which was won by Ambergate Sports College in Grantham.

The Lincolnshire special school caters for pupils from four to sixteen years of age with learning and behavioural difficulties and conditions including autism. Along with the Award, Ambergate has netted itself a £15,000 bursary which it plans to use to consolidate its intervention plan targeting two groups of students, those who are struggling and those with strong potential who can achieve more.

    Royal Air Force Award for Teacher of the Year
  • Anthony Hull, Costessey Junior School, Norwich
    National College Award for Headteacher of the Year
  • Crocketts Community School in Smethwick, Sandwell
    UK  winner of the Department for Education Award for Sustainable Schools
  • Film club members from Liphook C of E Junior School in Hampshire
    UK winners of  Film My School – a new competition
  • The LILAC team at Fleming Fulton, Belfast
    Award for Outstanding School Team
  • Joanne Martin, Highfurlong School, Blackpool
    Department for Education Award for Enterprise
  • Becky Newman, Tendring Technology College, Clacton-on-Sea
    TDA Award for Teaching Assistant of the Year
  • David Stinson, Sullivan Upper School, near Belfast
    The Becta Award for Next Generation Learning
  • Peter Jones, Cefn Saeson comprehensive school in Neath
    Ted Wragg Award for Lifetime Achievement
  • Philip Capper, Ysgol Bryn Elian in Colwyn Bay
    The Department for Education Award for Governor of the Year.
