The Government has introduced a UK-wide directory of over 150,000 childcare providers and family services. The Family Information Directory is available online and includes information about a range of providers, including childminders, nurseries, after-school clubs and children’s centres. The site also aims to provide information for parents and carers regarding the services and support available to them.

The Directory forms part of the Government’s new Family Information Direct programme, formerly known as Parent Know How, a service which incorporates independent advice from eighteen organisations, including charities and voluntary groups.

Launching the Directory, Children’s Minister Dawn Primarolo said: “…we want to ensure that anyone with childcare responsibilities – from mums and dads to grandparents and carers – has the information and support they need in one convenient place.”

Currently accessible through central government sites, it is hoped that the Directory will be made available through local authority websites and in other locations, such as libraries and children’s centres.
