The Children’s Secretary, Ed Balls, has joined forces with Henry Winkler (a.k.a. The Fonz) to launch a campaign focused on improving attitudes towards children with SEN and building their self-esteem.

At the Downing Street launch in January, the My Way! campaign set out its aims to raise awareness amongst children, teachers, schools, and parents of children who learn differently, to encourage pupils to share their experiences of learning and to inspire young people with SEN.

The campaign, organised by children’s newspaper First News, is being fronted by Henry Winkler, whose own experiences of dyslexia have motivated him to work to change perceptions of SEN.

At the campaign launch, Ed balls commented: “This is a great campaign, focused on raising awareness of the different ways children learn and giving all children the self esteem to achieve their potential….Through highlighting positive role models and sharing good examples of teaching and learning this campaign will promote inclusion in the classroom and inspire young people to go on and achieve.”

The March/April 2010 issue of SEN Magazine features an article by Ed Balls on Labour’s plans for SEN in the UK, should they win the next election, alongside articles by Conservative and Liberal Democrat shadow ministers.

This issue also features an interview with Henry Winkler in which he talks candidly about a childhood blighted by a lack of understanding of his learning difficulties, his children’s experiences of dyslexia and, of course, those Happy Days.
