Parents, governors and education professionals are being called upon to unite and campaign against education cuts introduced by the new Liberal/Conservative Government. Speaking at the education unions’ rally and lobby of Parliament in July, the General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Brendan Barber, outlined the need for all interested parties to create an alliance to tackle what he called “the coalition’s regressive approach to education.”

Mr Barber criticised particular Government initiatives, such as the abolition of the Building Schools for the Future programme, which he described as “a genuine success story that transformed 4,000 schools the length and breadth of Britain”, and the introduction of the massive extension of the academies programme which he claimed would divert funds away from schools that remained under local authority control.

He also spoke out against the manner in which the coalition has introduced its reforms, claiming that the academies bill was introduced “at breakneck speed, with next to no consultation”. “These reforms are driven by dogma not evidence, by the interests of ministers and consultants, not the needs of parents or children”, he said.
