Paralympic legend Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson was at the House of Commons yesterday to launch Energy Club, an extra-curricular, physical activity scheme for children aged between four and 11 years old.

Energy Club aims to ensure a lasting legacy from the Olympic and Paralympic Games by tackling the increasingly sedentary lives of young children. Targeting primary schools across the UK, Energy Club offers free activity sessions which include healthy eating and nutrition messaging led by a trained volunteer force.

Volunteers are being recruited by the charity and social enterprise Sports Leaders UK, of which Baroness Grey-Thompson is President. Volunteers will be parents and members of school networks, including young adults and recruits from major corporations.
“Energy Club is an exciting opportunity as our country moves forward from a fantastic summer of sport”, said Baroness Grey-Thompson. “This scheme builds on the great volunteer movement we saw during the Games”.

The new programme is being funded by the Government’s Cabinet Office through the Social Action Fund with an initial grant of £900,000, which provides the scheme for 900 schools. To increase its reach, the project will need to attract additional funding from the commercial sector.
