New Permanent Secretary at DfE

Chris Wormald has been appointed as the new Permanent Secretary at the Department for Education (DfE). Mr Wormald, currently the Director General for the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office, will succeed Sir David Bell who resigned recently to become Vice Chancellor of the University of Reading.

The Permanent Secretary is the most senior civil servant in a government ministry and is responsible for the day-to-day running of the department.

The appointment was made by Sir Bob Kerslake, the Head of the Civil Service, in consultation with the Prime Minister, the Education Secretary and the Deputy Prime Minister.

Chris Wormald will take up his new role at the end of March 2012.
