Final call for Home Access

Time is running out for families of children with SEN or severe disabilities to apply for a Home Access computer package.

The second phase of the Home Access programme, which closes at the end of the year, provides bespoke assistive technology solutions for those with disabilities and SEN alongside computers and internet connectivity provided under the standard Home Access scheme.

Since its launch in January this year, Home Access has provided more than 200,000 low income families with free computers and internet access and, due to the high levels of demand, applications for computer packages are now only being invited from families of children with severe disabilities or SEN.
As the programme draws to a close, many charities concerned with assistive technology have called for families to submit their applications immediately. Nigel Lewis of AbilityNet, said: “Home Access has already opened up the possibilities of the internet to thousands of children. I am pleased to back the call for the parents and carers to apply for the right equipment to allow severely disabled children to join them online.”

Home Access organisers anticipate that up to 12,000 children with more comprehensive needs, such as significant visual impairments, physical disabilities or learning difficulties, could eventually benefit from the programme through receiving specially tailored packages suited to their individual needs.
